This course will teach participants a number of economic principles, furnishing them with a set of tools to both enhance their analytical ability and to enable them to work more closely with economists at work . Applications and case-studies will be presented alongside the theory; participants will be encouraged to relate these to their own areas of work and that of government as a whole. The approach will be discursive and participatory. The course will:- introduce economic theory in an accessible and interactive manner- allow discussion of how economics should be used in policy - be very interactive allowing for the flow of ideas and giving participants the opportunity to apply the principles to case studies or scenarios;- complement the online learning and support materials, including an individual textbook;- describe recent trends in the economic data and the nature of the UK and world economy; Course topics: 1. What is Economics? 2. Demand, Supply and the Workings of the Market 3. Introduction to Macroeconomics 4. Market Failure 5. Micro-policy Interventions 6. Equity and Inequality 7.
