Taiwanese born artist; Yee's current exhibition titled Color Theory was born out of the elation of no longer being isolated - feeling safe enough to dream a bigger dream. These original, unapologetically energetic, mixed-media paintings are completely non-objective. Yee's complex mark making ranges from raw, primitive scratching to an awareness of the expressive lines and the lofty negative spaces of the Abstract Expressionists. Her choice of mark-making is a varied and as is her choice of materials which include oil, pastel, crayon, watercolor, wax resist, graphite, encaustic and charcoal. Layers upon layers exist easily beside raw canvas. Her use of colors is both nuanced and striking. Expectations are created and met with more expectations or dropped completely, patterns broken. These works are a visual and intellectual feast. They take the viewer to different places and spaces.
