Memo

Museum to pay tribute to local WWII Veteran USS Hornet CV-8 crewmember and author Richard Nowatzki LCDR USN (Ret).

To commemorate the 76th anniversary of the Tokyo Doolittle Raid, The USS Hornet Air, Sea, and Space Museum will host a special presentation on April 21th, featuring guest veteran and author of the USS Hornet CV-8, and witness to the Doolittle Raids on April 18th 1942, Mr. Richard Nowatzki. The day will also feature a historical introduction by USS Hornet author, historian, and Board Trustee, Robert Fish.

Nowatzki will share his memories of serving aboard the USS Hornet CV8 during the famous Doolittle Raid at 1:00 followed by a meet and greet.

His book, "Memoirs of a Navy Major" will also be available for purchase and autographs.

Richard Nowatzki LCDR USN (Ret): Born in Chicago in 1922, as a young seaman fresh out of boot camp, he was assigned to the USS Hornet CV8 before it was commissioned in October of 1941. His normal battle station was as a sight-setter on a 5-inch anti-aircraft gun at the aft end of the ship. During the Tokyo raid sortie, Nowatski poisoned himself right next to the flight deck and watched as the 16 B-25's were launched on their one way mission. He has many fond memories of the Army Air Corps fliers while they war enroot across the Pacific to the launch point of the Tokyo Raid. He remained part of the Hornet Crew until she was sunk in combat in October of 1942.

Robert Fish: Bob Fish has been a Trustee of the USS Hornet Museum since 2001. He has done significant research into the Navy's role in the Doolittle Tokyo Raid and has either authored, or contributed to, a number of books and articles on this subject. With Bob's guidance, the Hornet Museum played a key role in getting the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to the Raiders in 2015.

Visitors can meet former Hornet crew, sit in the cockpit of a fighter jet, and enjoy the sights and sounds of naval aviation. There will also be a Big Band performance, at 11:00 a.m.

Presentation at 1:00 pm.
