COURSE DESCRIPTION: This annual interdisciplinary course offers participants an overview of current topics in internal medicine including interactive case studies using automated audience response system. Interdisciplinary speakers present diverse clinical topics chosen for applicability to NP/PA and primary care physician practice settings. As complex patients transition care to the outpatient arena, current guideline based medicine typically initiated in the hospital setting continues to be important as patients transition out of the acute care setting. OBJECTIVES: Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: -Identify diagnostic and clinical decision making skills consistent with evidence-based guidelines-Identify current, clinically oriented, evidence-based practice recommendations in specialties such as cardiology, endocrinology, pediatrics, internal medicine, -surgery, behavioral medicine, preventive medicine, and women's health-Describe indications for diagnosis, management, and patient referral for clinical scenarios encountered in current practices-Identify current pharmaceutical considerations and indications, including new drugs, commonly prescribed for primary care conditions TARGET AUDIENCE: This conference emphasizes clinical care issues confronting busy clinicians including current pharmacology content. The program is designed for nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and primary care physicians. PHARMACOLOGY CONTENT: Select presentations in the program will contain pharmacology content. We will have an estimate of the approximate number of hours of pharmacology content as the meeting gets closer and faculty finalize their presentation content. OPTIONAL HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS (Additional Fee Applies): JOINT INJECTION: Includes overview of inclusion and exclusion criteria for basic joint injections. Participants will learn and practice techniques of three types of landmark guided joint injections: trochanteric bursa, knee, and shoulder. Injection techniques will be taught on human cadavers. BIOPSY WORKSHOP: Upon completion, the learner will be able to perform shave, punch, and excisional biopsies. Basic suturing skills are recommended as suturing will not be taught in this course. Biopsy techniques will be taught using pig's feet. CASTING/SPLINTING WORKSHOP: This case-based interactive workshop will review indications for splinting and casting and provide a live demonstration of how to apply Robert Jones dressings. Participants will learn how to apply sugar tong and ulnar gutter splints through both demonstration and hands on practice. In addition, you will have an opportunity to apply and remove thumb spica casts. POCUS WORKSHOP: Description coming soon WOUND CARE WORKSHOP: Upon completion of the workshop, the learner will be able to perform advance wound assessments. Participants will gain an understanding of the different types of wound products available to manage wounds. Wound debridement techniques will be taught using simulated wounds on pig's feet.
